Prof. S. P. Chatterjee, D. Lit, Padmabhusan, was a visionary scientist-academician and institution builder who founded the Department of Geography in the University of Calcutta, and National Atlas Organization. It may be noted that Prof. Chatterjee was the first chairman of the International Geographical Union from Asia. As one of the leaders of the Indian Science Congress Association, he was instrumental in reframing the syllabi of geography in Indian Higher Education. He was also one of the founders of Institute of Landscape, Ecology and Ekistics (ILEE) and was its first president since 1983. He advised that this Institute should act as a platform to exchange interdisciplinary knowledge on the issues befitting its name.
Prof. S. C. Mukhopadhyay, D. Sc., was instrumental in bringing out Indian Journal of Landscape Systems, the predecessor of Indian Journal of Landscape Systems and Ecological Studies, couple of years before he co-founded Institute of Landscape, Ecology and Ekistics (ILEE). He was a generous editor to encourage young researchers who used to get the golden opportunity for publishing their works in this widely circulated journal. With the support of young scholars he steered the Institute and its activities for wider visibility in India and aboard. His reputation of nurturing young scholars in interdisciplinary research and publication remained unquestionable till his last breathe.
